PGT thường bắt đầu bằng việc mô tả địa hình chung/cách trình bày lĩnh vực nghiên cứu, dùng một hoặc nhiều cách thức sau:
Bước 1: Khẳng định tầm quan trọng.
Tác giả cho rằng chủ đề nghiên cứu là hữu ích, có liên quan, quan trọng và xứng đáng nghiên cứu vì nó xác lập một phần nghiên cứu vốn có từ lâu, có ý nghĩa và sinh động. Các khẳng định tầm quan trọng thường phục vụ như câu chủ đề (topic sentences) và vì vậy thường được theo sau bởi các chứng cứ để bổ trợ câu phát biểu này.

Swales (1981) phân biệt 2 kỹ thuật trích dẫn: 1) trích dẫn đầy đủ (integral citation) và 2) trích dẫn không đầy đủ (non-integral citation). Trích dẫn đầy đủ là trích dẫn mà tên người nghiên cứu xuất hiện trong câu trích dẫn như là thành phần của câu. Trích dẫn không đầy đủ là trích dẫn mà tên người nghiên cứu hoặc nằm trong ngoặc đơn hoặc được đề cập ở một nơi khác bởi một con số nằm trên dòng kẻ thông thường hoặc một cách thức nào khác. Các ví dụ sau đây được cung cấp bởi Swales (2011) về trích dẫn đầy đủ và trích dẫn không đầy đủ.
