ADVICE hay AN ADVICE (n)
‘Advice’ là một danh từ không đếm được (uncountable noun) vì vậy, ‘one gives advice’ chứ không phải là ‘an advice’.
Đúng: They give advice to people with HIV and AIDS.
Sai: They give an advice to people with HIV and AIDS.
A PIECE OF ADVICE, A WORD OF ADVICE, A BIT OF ADVICE
Để chỉ ‘một lời khuyên’ ở tiếng Anh, ta có thể dùng ‘a piece of advice’, ‘a word of advice’, ‘a few words of advice’, ‘a bit of advice’…. như:
– Let me give you a piece of advice.
– A word of advice. Don’t wear that dress
Tuy nhiên, các từ ngữ trên ít phổ biến trong tiếng Anh. Thay vào đó, người ta dùng ‘advice’ chủ yếu như một từ như:
– If you are worried about your symptoms, contact your doctor for advice.
SOME ADVICE
Người ta hay dùng ‘some advice’ (một ít lời khuyên)
– I really need some advice.

1. You SHOULD act more responsibility.
2. You OUGHT TO consult a doctor.
3. IF I WERE YOU, I wouldn’t let it happen.
4. WHY DON’T YOU consult a doctor.
5. IT IS A GOOD IDEA to invest in real estate.
& TAKE IT FROM ME: hãy tin ở tôi (được dùng khi bạn đưa ra một lời khuyên dựa vào kinh nghiệm của chính bạn). Ví dụ: TAKE IT FROM ME, it isn’t worth buying a cheap laptop.
ADVICE hay ADVISE (v)
Không nên lẫn lộn giữa ‘advice’ (n) và ‘advise’ (v)
Đúng: I would advise you to quit smoking.
Sai: I would advice you to quit smoking.
MỘT SỐ MẪU CÂU VỚI ĐỘNG TỪ ‘ADVISE’
– Advise sb against doing sth: Khuyên ai đừng làm gì
Ví dụ: They advised her against marrying quickly.
– Advise sb to do sth: Khuyên ai làm gì
Ví dụ: I advise you to think carefully before making any decision.
– Advise doing sth: Khuyên làm gì
Ví dụ: I’d advise buying your ticket well in advance if you want to travel in August.
3 NGHĨA TRONG ĐỘNG TỪ ADVISE’
1. Advise: Khuyên ai làm gì
The doctor advised me to take a compete rest.
2. Advise: Cố vấn (cho ai) về
We employ an expert to advise on new technology.
3. Advise (thương mại): Thông tin hoặc thông báo cho ai
Please advise us of the dispatch of the goods/when the goods are dispatched.
ĐỘNG TỪ + ADVICE
1. Give/offer advice : Cho một lời khuyên
2. Follow/take/ act on advice: Theo/nghe theo/làm theo lời khuyên
3. Ignore/reject advice: Phớt lờ/ từ chối lời khuyên
If you take my advice you’ll see a doctor.
ADVICE + GIỚI TỪ (ABOUT, FOR, ON, TO)
1. Advice about bringing up children
2. Here is some advice for pregnant women.
3. Can you give me some advice on where to buy good maps?
4. My advice to you would be to wait for a few months.
Ý NGHĨA CỦA TỪ ‘LỜI KHUYÊN’ (ADVICE) TRONG CÁC THÀNH NGỮ, CÁCH NGÔN
Thông thường, khi ta sử dụng một thành ngữ (idioms), một cách ngôn ‘proverb’ ở tiếng Anh ta ‘thấy’ chúng thường cho (ta) lời khuyên (offer advice). Nếu ta gõ cụm từ tiếng Anh ‘advice in idioms’ thì sẽ thấy vô số kết quả như: ‘Proverbs are old but familiar sayings that usually give advice’…. ‘They offer advice about how to live and also transfer some underlying ideas, principles and values of a given culture / society…. ‘Let sleeping dogs lie is a recommendation to leave things as they are and ….
Nay, ta chỉ cần lấy một idiom mà cách đây mấy ngày thầy Trần Văn Phương, thầy dạy chúng tôi ở Đại học Sư phạm Huế, ‘khuyên’ tôi khi tôi đăng môt stt than vãn tuổi … ‘Grin and bear’ mà được thầy dùng vốn được hiểu tương đương ở tiếng Việt là ‘ngậm bồ hòn làm ngọt hay phải nhẫn nhục chịu đựng điều cay đắng… nhưng ‘ý tại ngôn ngoại’ của thầy tôi là (mượn ca từ của Lê Hựu Hà) ‘Cười lên đi em ơi Dù nước mắt rớt trên vành môi..’
